COMMODITY ECONOMICS FOR NATURAL RESOURCES
(objectives)
The course on "Merceologia delle Risorse Naturali" deals with the main issues related to the management of natural resources and its effect on the environment, taking into consideration availability, utilization, international exchanges and some major sectors in the Italian and international economy. Particular attention is paid to the problems of sustainable production also in relation to the various productive sectors, especially for the energy and agro-food sectors. During the course seminars, guided tours or participation in conferences or study days can be organized; some seminars may be provided in English if necessary.

Reserves, resources and raw materials: the scarcity of natural resources, technical concepts and empirical realities; the "new shortages"; distribution, exploitation and exhaustion; the role of technological innovation, production dynamics, dematerialisation, replacement and recycling. International trade: reference to the main theories; Gatt and Wto, future prospects. The energy constraint: economic and environmental implications, renewable and non-renewable energy sources, technological and economic evaluation; production and consumption of energy and energy intensity: energy situation in Italy, Europe and the world; Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of different energy technologies. Outline of industrial sectors derived from oil: refining and petrochemistry and related sectors. The environmental problem: environmental degradation and sustainable development, relations between business and the environment, objectives and tools for environmental compatibility. Monographic part: study of a topic of particular interest and relevance.
