This seminar is aimed at describing the history of the decolonization in Africa, looking at the role played by African political thought and its consequences in the anticolonial struggle. After providing a brief analysis of the history of colonization and anti-colonial resistance in the 19th century, the course will focus on the 20th century. Specific lectures will be dedicated to African political and philosophical thought, with particular regard to Pan-Africanism. The course will include the analysis of specific case studies, analysing in particular the role played by Cold War powers, and African position on the international stage. The aim of the course is to consider the African continent not as a passive actor on the international stage but as a protagonist.
