(syllabus)
The course is about cultural and creative industries and organizations, and moreover about public institutions involved in their regulation. The course has an applied approach and learning objectives focused on the development of professional capacities (statistical sources, methodologies for the analysis of the demand, business and organizational models, case studies). At the core of the first part of the course there are the demands for cultural and creative goods and services from the various economic subjects (households, firms, public sector, external subjects), with an analysis of Italian and international data and an illustration of the main interpretative models suggested by the economic literature. In the second part the focus is on the different economics activities, and corresponding markets, for cultural and creative products: cultural heritage, museums and cultural sites, arts markets and contemporary art, performing arts, publishing industry, film and audiovisual industry, musical industry, other creative industries. Some cross-cutting topics receive particular attention: labor markets for cultural and creative occupations; intellectual property rights; public policies for culture and cultural and creative industries, challenges (opportunities and risks) coming from the digital technological revolution.
Detailed program: 1. Cultural and creative industries sector. Definitions and dimensions. 2. Households monetary expenditure for cultural consumption. Attendance, quantities consumed and prices. Participation to cultural consumptions. Examination of Italian, European Union and international data. Interpretation and models for the economic analysis. 3. Public expenditures and cultural policies. The value of cultural capital. Design of cultural policies: central/local, direct/indirect, supply/demand, price/quality, public/private/nonprofit. Public expenditures data for Italy and European Union. 4. International trade for cultural goods and services. Tourism, cultural capital and creative and cultural industries. Cultural tourism in Italy. 5. Employment and labour market for cultural and creative occupations. Remuneration of cultural and creative activities and intellectual property rights. 6. Cultural heritage. Preservation activities. The Italian institutional model. 7. Museums and cultural sites. Economics: multi-product organizations, scale economies and congestion, differentiation of product/services, pricing, finance of museums. Case studies. 8. Economic and business models in the cultural and creative industries: arts markets and contemporary art, performing arts, publishing industry, film and audiovisual industry, musical industry, other creative industries. 9. Cultural policies: challenges and perspectives.
