VACIAGO PAOLO
(syllabus)
The course retraces some of the topics dealt with in Germanic Philology 1, analysing in greater depth the evolution from Indo-European to Old English at a phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical level, taking into account also other Germanic languages; texts written in other medieval Germanic languages will be read and analyzed. The course will furthermore consider the development of Historical Linguistics as a discipline, focussing on the Neogrammarians and the Structuralists, as well as the development of the notion of linguistic change.
NOTE: Students intending to take part in the course are invited to contact the lecturer before the beginning of the course (during the month of September therefore) so that the course may be organized adequately (timetable, preliminary reading, etc.)
