MATERIALS AND BUILDING ELEMENTS
(objectives)
Knowing the chemical and physical characteristics of the main materials that can be used in buildings and their possibilities for transformation into semi-finished products, components and structural systems. In particular, the aim is to provide the tools to understand the criteria for the choice of materials and construction techniques most economically appropriate, the configuration of the architectural image of buildings, the construction of their space and the optimization of their environmental quality . Through examples of architecture, contemporary and older, the aim is to understand the relationships between their structural engineering system and the material culture they express.

The course deals with materials, construction techniques and construction elements, and will highlight their historical evolution and the relationship between construction techniques and the conception of the architectural space in relation to the basic principles of structural functioning and the building envelope. The approaches to each topic are related to: - the performances provided by materials and construction elements in response to the requirements that the building must satisfy; - the building as a system of related architectural, functional and construction elements in order to deliver the performances; - the building process as a system of players (users, designers, builders, etc.) and activities. The course will be developed through a series of lectures integrated with visits, site visits (and exercises. Specifically, the programme is divided into two parts: I. materials (a. clay materials; B. stone materials; C. types of concrete; D. wooden materials; E. metal materials; F. glass materials); II. construction elements (G. land, foundations and attachment to the ground; H. elevated structures; I. vertical casing and internal walls; L. internal horizontal elements and roofing; M. mechanical and pedestrian vertical connections; N. interior and exterior fixtures).

Aims The course aims to build knowledge on materials and building systems Trough the Specifications Of each material • Each material is shown from cave to cradle following manufacturing process. • its function in the whole building • analysis and comprehension of building systems by decomposing it into its components and elements • Critical studies of building systems from a survey of significant case studies of architectural design, highlighting the technical issues that affect/shape the design. Contents 1. Material Specification 2. Stones 3. Bricks 4. Steel and metals 5. Concrete 6. Wood 7. Glass 8. Insulations and waterproofing systems 9. Plastic 10. Masonry 11. Arch and vaults 12. Beams and slabs 13. Foundations and soils 14. Roofs 15. Windows 16. Stairs
The examination will be based on: discussion on course items and drawings
