AcquireB1 level linguistic competences (based on the CEFR) and communicative strategies in English. Develop reflective skills concerning the cultural context, the lexicogrammar and the phonological structures of English. Start the development of an integrated competence in translating from English into Italian. Develop text analysis and comprehension skills in a contrastive perspective, to enhance the learner’s autonomous reformulation of discourse. Enhance intercultural competence.

(syllabus)
The course first part will be focused on a detailed account on the roles played by translators today. Students will acquire full awareness of what translation is what are the (inter)cultural skills required for the translation of any text. The second part will aim at the acquisition of theoretical tools to be used in the translation practice. Much energy will be devoted to the topic of audiovisual translation (dubbing and subtitling). Theoretical knowledge will be tuned with translation practice in order to foster text analysis competences and enhance the acquisition of translation skills.
An excellent knowledge of Italian is required for the translation of texts from English into Italian.

The course offers an introduction to the Language analysis of both written and spoken varieties of English, moving from a textual perspective. This aims to start a reflection on the mechanisms of language and its use in context, thus setting the basis for further development of intra- and interlanguage awareness during the following two years. Taking the basic levels of language description (phonetics, lexis and syntax) as a starting point, the course will consider their interaction with the textual and the contextual level, as is typical of the discourse analytical perspective.
