(syllabus)
The main topic of the course consists in the integration of corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis, i.e. the research area called Corpus Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS). Students will focus on the creation of specialised corpora in order to collect relevant quantitative and qualitative data regarding the study of discourse in different contexts (e.g. journalism, advertisements, film scripts, political speech, etc.). Students will carry out several practical activities in the computer room in order to learn how to use a software called WordSmith Tools and its applications, which can be used to analyse a corpus through word frequency lists, word concordance and collocations, and key words.
