Elements of Gas-Dynamics Review of fundamental principles. Governing equations of compressible fluid flow. Steady 1-D isentropic flow with area change, with friction and with heat transfer. Normal shock waves, oblique shock waves, hodograph shock polar, reflection and interaction of oblique shock waves. Expansion waves. Flow with small perturbations. Introduction to the method of characteristics.
Elements of Propulsion Theory of propulsion. Aircraft gas turbine engine, cycle analysis of engines. Engine performance analysis: gas generator, turbojet engine, turbojet with afterburning, turbofan engine with separate exhaust nozzles, turbofan with afterburning with mixed flow exhaust stream, turboprop engine, ramjet. Turbomachinery, inlets, nozzles and combustion systems. Propellers. Reciprocating engines. Chemical rockets: propellants and combustion, thrust chamber and nozzles.
