(syllabus)
The course will focus on the evolution of cities in Europe from the 18th to the 20th century. Our studies will concentrate principally on economic and social factors, and will be centered in particular on capital cities and their interactions with their wider metropolitan areas. The monographic section will focus on the long-term transformations of Rome as a capital city and on the structural problems which have influenced its development. Students attending the course will be invited to carry out experimental research both individually and in groups. These activities will constitute a fundamental part of the material submitted for examination. Students intending to write their dissertation in the field of economic history can arrange an individual program with the professor.
