This course provides an overview of Early Modern English literature through the study of a variety of texts by some of the most representative authors of the British canon. The course will focus on topics, contexts and textual strategies with a view to underlining the cultural reflection on the figure of the stranger / foreigner through the analysis and recurrence of binary oppositions such as man/woman, identity/otherness, us/them, black/white, culture/nature, here/there etc.. The texts will be examined through the methods provided by cultural, postcolonial and gender studies.
