(syllabus)
The module is intended to provide an introduction to the main theoretical issues in translation studies and to the pragmatic aspects of translation. Translation theory: introduction to text types (focus on argumentative texts). Text analysis and theoretical approaches to translation. Text structure and adaptation: linguistic adaptation and cultural adaptation. Contrastive analysis (English/Italian). Overview of main translation strategies. Special languages and the transfer of knowledge. Domain texts: basic features. Introduction to terminology. Translation practice (English to Italian): application of translation strategies and techniques; training in written translation; training in sight translation (first level, speaking). Classroom activities include: frontal lesson; power point presentations; dictation; sight translation; training in written translation.
