(objectives)
STUDY THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MAN & NATURE IN THE ANCIENT TIME. STUDY BIODETERIORATION RELATED TO THE VEGETATION IN THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREAS. ANALYSE HOW WAS THE PLANNING OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARKS IN ITALY AND DESCRIBE THE PROBLEMS OF MANAGEMENT. STUDY HISTORICAL PARKS, GIVING EXAMPLES FROM THE ASSYRO-BABYLONIANS, EGYPTIANS, GREEK-ROMANS, MEOIOEVAL TIMES TO MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY AGE. DESCRIBE THE PROBLEMS OF MANAGEMENTS OF HISTORICAL GARDENS. GIVE PRACTICAL FIELD EXAMPLES, VISITING AREAS SUCH AS COLOSSEUM AND HORTI FARNESIANI ON THE PALATINE, ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREAS IN THE APPIA ANTICA, AND OTHER HISTORICAL PARKS IN THE CENTRAL ITALY.

Programma Module 1.- The archaeological sites (2 credits) Man & Nature in the ancient world: evolution of such relationship. Problems due to plant colonization in archaeological sites due to biodeterioration problems. Positive effects due to plants in the conservation and valorisation of cultural heritage and nature conservation. Cultural sites as refuge site for nature. Development and management of archaeological sites. Module 2.- Historical gardens and parks (2 credits) The origin of the gardens. Historical excursus in the Assyrian - Babylon’s, Egyptian, Romano, Medieval, modern and contemporary ages. The botanical management in historical gardens and parks. The botanical catalogues (PG/B) in the historical gardens and parks. Module 3 Field practical activities (2 credits) Excursions in significant sites: Colosseum and Horti Farnesiani on the Palatine. The archaeological sites of Appia Antica. Visit in historical gardens in Central Italy for some thematic deepening.
