The course – intended as a seminar – aims to investigate the multifarious aspects of early 16th-century Roman antiquarian and literary culture (by the papacy of Julius II to the sack of Rome), with particular attention to the relationship of the men of letters with the rediscovery of classical antiquity, archaeology and the arts; and to illustrate the relations maintained with Rome by the protagonists of the literature of that era: Bembo, Castiglione, Ariosto, Bibbiena, Sadoleto, Michelangelo, Cellini, Aretino, and others; the frequency is highly recommended.
