The course includes class lectures and on-site and class exercises. In order to enhance the capacity to observe and interpret architecture the students will be given the possibility to gather information through autoptic observations with minimal measurements, and then transfer them into a series of diagrammatic drawings. This will be achieved through two stages of analysis.
On site observations. Some lessons will be held in the field where the students will be asked to take notes on structural, architectural and construction elements. It will be necessary to observe in detail buildings, select significant elements of their fabric, understand the plan and elevation, analyse the overall plan of the building to reconstruct the design concept. All observations will be transferred to a sketchbook.
Class exercises will aim at enhancing the capacity to interpret data collected on-site in a rational and critical way. The aim is to reconstruct the design and construction process, interpret the structural layout of the buildings, understand how a fabric was conceived and executed, analyse the decoration and understand the building phases.
Drawings will have the form of diagrams, i.e. abstract representations through line graphs -including maps, plans, sections, elevations and axonometries. They will not be traditional surveys, but a critical reading of the building.
Class lectures will be focused on:
1. Use of diagrams in the study of ancient architecture from the Renaissance to nowadays.
2. Understanding of the design of ancient architecture.
3. Study of the principles of design of ancient architectural orders.
4. Analysis of construction and structural layout of ancient buildings.
