(objectives)
The course is focused on the analysis of buildings, as resulting from a design and construction process. A focal point will be given to ruined buildings, which give the opportunity for a unique understanding about their construction, being their masonry visible in all its components. On site and class practice exercise will introduce to analysis of the materials used in construction, the way they were transformed and assembled, the dimensioning of walls and the building phases. This course aims at enhancing the skills in interpreting built heritage also under other point of views: the design process underlying the construction, the form expressed in terms of interior and exterior architecture, the formal expression given to the surfaces. The representation of architecture thus will be not only considered as a graphic process but as a fundamental tool for interpretation of architecture, from a general level to the very detail, as a complementary tool to other ones, such as photography or computer design. Hand drawing will be the main tool for the cognitive process which makes possible in depth observation of the building and its fabric.
