Title of the course: Claudius' principate in the opinion of his contemporary and in modern historiography
The course aims to present and discuss the opinions expressed on Emperor Claudius' personality by his contemporary, in particular Seneca and the historian and biographers who lived few years later, such as Suetonius and Tacitus. Moreover, the course will analyse Claudius' figure in modern historiography. The course includes lessons on the polictical Roman lexicon and a seminar, in which scholars who have recently studied the Julio-Claudian age, will take part.
