(syllabus)
1. An introduction to the discipline, its history, sources, and interactions with other disciplines. 2. The politics, institutions and cults of Greek cities in the Hellenistic period, paying particular attention to Iasos in Caria.
The course includes: (1) An introduction to the Hellenistic world, with particular focus on the Greek poleis of the period. (2) An examination of their political institutions—in their aspects of continuity and evolution—their relationship with monarchs, the role of the elite, and the intense network of interactions among the cities, expressed through diplomatic relations, exchanges of honours and judges, recognitions of syngeneia and asylia, and shared participation in cults. The topics will be approached through the evidence of literary, epigraphic, archaeological, and iconographic sources. Students will also be introduced to the main databases of Greek literary texts and inscriptions, as well as to the principal bibliographical research tools. (3) Student presentations on selected topics related to the course, to be agreed upon with the teacher.
