(syllabus)
The introductory section of the course examines, both from a historical and theoretical point of view, the transition of cinema and audiovisual from analogue to digital regime. Once these coordinates have been clarified, the focus shifts to the case of Pixar Animation Studios. Born from a rib of George Lucas' Lucasfilm, acquired by Steve Jobs in 1986 and owned in 2006 by Walt Disney, this company is today a great example of a creative industry capable of imposing a quality brand on a global level which is the key to a precise vision of the world, as well as a solid and full-bodied imagery that is both child and adult. We will explain how films such as Toy Story, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars or Inside Out are the result of an industrial, narrative, aesthetic and ideological system that has revitalized animated cinema, proposing, between technophilia and nostalgia, a articulated reflection on the contemporary "American way of life".
