(syllabus)
The course aims at illustrating the main theories of rights in the Italian and international debates. Particular attention will be given to the theoretical reflection on the specific function of rights, the determination of their holders, their justification. The course is divided into three parts (each of 2 lessons for a total of 6 lessons): the first one to illustrate the historical and conceptual origins of the age of rights; the second one concerning the presentation of the main theories of rights; the third one concerning the seminar discussion of theoretical and normative issues posed by selected cases of controversial rights (right to conscientious objection; right to basic income). SYLLABUS: - Conceptual issues related to rights - Taxonomies of rights - The axiological foundation of rights: dignity, equality, freedom, autonomy - Theories of rights: will theory; interest theory - Controversial cases (1): right to conscientious objection - Controversial cases (2): right to basic income The course will begin on Thursday 19 October and will end on Thursday 30 November. Lessons will be held every Thursday from 10.15 am to 12.00 am in the 248 classroom (on the 2nd floor of the Department). Frequency is compulsory. The teaching materials will be indicated and made available by during the lessons (for a total of up to 70 pages).
