ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 2M
(objectives)
The laboratory 2M is the place of the natural development of the skills acquired in previous laboratory 1M. Its objective is to achieve a product comparable to what - in the current legislation in Italy - usually is defined as the final project, through the acquisition of a design sensibility oriented towards realism and based on the close integration of the contributions of the four specialist teaching modules, which allows cross-checking to be able to produce a reasonably achievable project. The design studio’s goal is to achieve a product comparable to what the Italian legislation usually defines as “final design”. It is, in other words, to put students in conditions, starting from the needs of the construction, to manage the simultaneous presence of specialist contributions (composition, structural, regulations, technological, environmental, technical physics, economic) involved in an achievable architectural project.

The project developed in the design studio 2m is the natural continuation of what started in the design studio 1m. The prerequisite for registration is to have followed the previous design studio 1M in the same channel. The topic is a medium complexity architectural project, on which the cross-checks of the four teaching modules converge: Architectural and Urban Composition, Architectural Technology, Technical Physics, Economic evaluation of the project. The main topics concern: - Criteria for liveability of the space - Architecture and construction - Relationships between shapes and materials - Normative references on building construction - Representation and communication of the construction project - Plant engineering and environmental elements - Advanced materials and construction procedures - Details of alternative construction solutions - Economic evaluation of the design procedures - Checking the feasibility

During the Laboratorio students will design a building with an high complex program both from a functional point of view, structural and mechanical. At the same time students will face the complex undertakings of inserting their building in the pre-existing urban fabric of the contemporary city. The laboratorio is coordinated with the laboratorio 1M: students, who have developed their project up to preliminary level, during this semester will continue the process of development especially from a construction, mechanical and economic point of view. The laboratorio together with design has three other subjects: Tecnologia e della costruzione, della Fisica tecnica e dell’Estimo. During the design studio, students are requested to engage in a continue research of architecture solutions, able to solve issues and problems posed by the different disciplines which are part of the Laboratorio. Sections and elevations, witha typical plan will be detailed as working drawings. The design studio is organized in lectures on specific subject, design seminars and detailed discussions of the projects. The student work will be organized around a scheduled of in internal deadlines.

Aims The design studio’s goals for the building construction design are to increase the students awareness of the complex transformation process of an architectural idea in a real building. The student competence to create coherence regarding content and design subject is our main aims.
Two main aspect will be investigated during the design development: • analysys and verify the building features like, thermal aspects, air and water tightness, sun protection, …. • detail design. The main part of the building will be developed till the working drawings scale.
BIM as a work tool. We use a BIM tool to control the project and also to evaluate it. BIM technology allow the integration of structural, construction an mechanics in the same file.

Building and environmental physics and mechanical equipments
The course allows students to develop a deeper intuitive understanding and control of the energetic behavior and performance of the building and of its components, of the building-plant system, of the occupant comfort issues (thermal, lighting, acoustical). During the course students will carry out a building analysis and project (starting on the Lab1M developed design project) focused also on the energetic behavior and performance of the building itself, and the mechanical building services design.

The lectures review basic subjects as heat transfer, psycrometrics, climatic conditions, thermal and visual comfort and are focused on their relation with energy and environmental performance of the buildings. Heating and cooling loads. Passive (bioclimatic architecture) and active (plants, building services..) systems are also illustrated in the lessons. Students will deal with the following topics:
1. Building Envelope design, focusing on energetic behavior and thermal properties. 2. Heating and cooling loads estimation. 3. Building plants and mechanical services integration in architecture – Location and sizing. 4. HVAC systems type choice, design and distribution. 5. Solar Technologies integration in buildings for heating and electricity production. 6. Daylighting, FLD calculation. 7. Acoustics.
Good basis knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, building physics, lighting, acoustics is required.

These are the guiding principles of such a procedure: • sharing: achieving greater convergence of public and private interests, to satisfy the requests of the local community and those interacting in the wider area (the entire metropolitan category, regional, etc.). • efficiency: implementation of the interventions with the minimum use of resources and time; • effectiveness: provide a selection of solutions in terms of "utility investment"; • completeness: analytical definition of each stage of the interventions, both on the revenue and on that of the particular costs attention to risk management activities (risk management); • Flexibility: to have, in the program of interventions, in the sensitivity analysis can predict possible changes, over time, of planned interventions • Feasibility: achieve a project set up so that all information is available and verifiable, in certifiable substance both in the methods used both in the results to be obtained. In actual operations, the module indicates the architect-designer of the way economic design itself. Task well outside while important "creative design", essential conversely to adapt to European standards and the economy of all countries.
