The teaching points to ensure the knowledge about the of the «active citizenship» phenomenon, either at the conceptual level or under the point of view of the concrete actions of the social organizations which are recognized as the actors playing the leading role in the process of change within social, political, economic systems and institutions at the aim of promoting and protecting human and civil rights, supporting the most vulnerable in society and and taking care for Common Goods.
The course will be structured into three parts:
I. First of all the teaching historicizes the evolutionary lines and the main theoretical and conceptual issues about the citizenship category in the context of the European history of the XIX-XXI centuries and of the contemporary historical, philosophical, political and legal thought;
II. The next part focuses above the identification and the description of the «active citizenship» organizations among public and private actors, in reference to any actions made with either the advocacy promoters or services managers and with particular regard to their role in the transformation of democratic regimes and of the welfare systems. To this end, the course examines both the Italian and European context in which these organizations act; the same active citizenship players will narrate their practical experiences in classroom.
III. The course also aims to analyze the key role of the School in promoting active citizenship policies and developing a cultural underpinning for a democratic, effective and supportive European identity. After a first theoretical approach to the theme of citizenship and coexistence in the European school, attention will be paid to the innovative teaching strategies that have effectively developed best practices and exercises covering a broad range of topics such as defining terms associated with citizenship and human rights education, children’s rights, democracy at school, tolerance and the problem of low educational achievements of pupils from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, often resulting in early dropouts.
The experience gained through the course activities are expected to help students educators and social workers to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values required to effectively contribute to the active citizenship.
