ANNUNZIATA SANDRA
(syllabus)
The course aims to provide theoretical background for a deep analysis and interpretation of territories, their modification and their representation. The course will work on the questions: how territories can be seen, understood, represented and narrate and how their representation influence practices of planning and design? After a brief introduction about how territories have been represented in history, the course will focus on different mode of territorial representation in the contemporaneity. Beside, the cartographical and mapping approach, one of the most important tool for the territorial analysis and planning, the course will delve into geographical, narrative and symbolic approach to the analysis and representation of territories with focus on atlas and conceptual representation. The core of the course is that maps (and the act of mapping) is always a selection, approximation and symbolic interpretation of what a territory is. How to deal with territorial representation? How to render the contemporary territories which are complex, layered and polysemous? Finally, what theoretical and practical tool are necessary for a meaningful territorial representation adequate for decision making processes and interventions at large scale? In order to answer these questions, the course will explore innovation in territorial representation, planning documents, and text of different sort. In order to see how representations works in practice in the re-imaging of cities the professor will present “city tales” using different sources and material. The city tales will inform the student on how and trough which representations European cities are transforming meeting environmental issues.

Settlement, Environment and Landscape
The SEL course, lasting one year, will jointly three components - Settlement, Environment and Landscape - considering their inseparable complementarity for the management of the reality around us. It will be a unitary course, led by lecturers who will perform the different parts of a common path.
The historic component, carried out in the first semester, will face the phenomenon "City" over time, and its manifold representations such as maps, charts, plans. Students will be introduced to the GIS data coverage model of QGIS and several sample applications.
The landscape training will introduce students to the meaning of landscape, focusing on its constitutive parts and proposing exercises on landscape reading, interpretation and representation. It will introduce the fundamental elements of open space design, with particular reference to the treatment of the soil, grading, to the role of vegetation, to the relations with buildings, urban realm and public space.
The urban planning component – in the first semester - will introduce students to the social, environmental and urban issues characterizing Italy since 1945 until today, explaining the mutations occurred in the settlements and infrastructural networks, in the administrative systems, in the matrixes and objectives of the urban planning tools, with particular reference to the seeking of sustainability. In the second semester, the urban planning component will deal with the European contemporary issues of the urban management, offering as a practical assignment a detailed reading and interpretation applied to an area of Rome.

RIZZO BIANCAMARIA
(syllabus)
The Course aims to provide students with basic knowledge of urban planning in general, with particular reference to urban-scale analysis. Reading the territorial context plays a central role in the Course, as it allows students to experience the use of different techniques and tools (map analysis, photo returns, statistical surveys, photographic campaigns, listening to citizens, questionnaires, etc.). .) aimed at highlighting criticalities and potentials of a specific urban area. This "state of fact" will then be compared, as far as possible critically, with the "state of law", ie with the requirements of the current Municipal Plan. In particular, the Course will have as a case study the territory of the Municipality III of Rome, subdivided into many sub-areas on each of which will focus the work of the students, carried out in groups. In order to provide the students with the tools necessary to face the application part of the Course, frontal lessons, containing both theoretical references and practical examples of the most relevant themes, will be conducted.
