The module illustrates the main phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical features of contemporary English. It also trains students in the use of monolingual dictionaries.
Language improvement classes: reading, writing, listening and speaking activities leading to the required level.

STUDENTS MUST PASS THEIR B1 (first language) OR A2 (second language) LANGUAGE TESTS BEFORE DOING THIS EXAM. STUDENTS WILL BE AWARDED 12 ECTS ONLY IF THEY PASS THE EXAM
STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO ATTEND CLASSES. IF THEY CAN'T, THEY ARE REQUESTED TO MEET THE COURSE TEACHER AT THE BEGINNING OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR.

• Jackson H., Words and Their Meaning, Longman, 1988 (chapters 1, 2, 3, 12).
• One of the following monolingual dictionaries (latest edition):
- Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary
- Collins Cobuild Advanced Learner’s English Dictionary
- Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English
- MacMillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners
- Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary
