(syllabus)
The course will present the basic concepts of pragmatics in linguistics, in particular language as communication and action, the illocutionary act, the use of performatives ; in addition it will discuss Grice’s cooperation principle, what is not explicitly said (inferences, implicatures and presuppositions). A final section will deal with the man topics in micro-pragmatics: the difference between text and discourse, the linguistic reference concepts (deixis and anaphora), information structure.
Students who will attend the course may write a survey in which they apply the theoretical concepts to a selection of various typologies of texts they will choose.
