RACISM: AN ISSUE OF CONTEMPORARY HISTORY
The course aims at exploring the issue of racism as a distinctive feature of our contemporary age that influences collective imaginary, conditions intellectuals and scholars, inspires policies, laws and administrative strategies, and has also laid the foundations to systemic use of violence for ethnic cleansing and genocides.
We will explore the origins of racism, its main expressions in the development of European thought between 18th and 20th century, anti-Semitism, colonial racism, the relation between war and racism, the use of racial identities in propaganda and in movements of public opinion and racial policies in the 1900s. The question of racial identities in contemporary Italian history will be closely investigated.
