(syllabus)
The course aims to analyze the opportunities to use movies as historical sources and historical "agent", because it not only represents a vision but also contributes to build new historical views. It could be very useful to study social history and belongs and self representations, and this course will be focused on British history during the 80s. Six themes will be picked up:
- Work: Billy Elliot (Stephen Daldry, 2000); Piovono Pietre (Ken Loach, 1993); - Social Integration: This is England (Shane Meadows, 2006); My Beautiful Laundrette (Stephen Frears, 1985); - Irish question: Il nome del padre (Jim Sheridan, 1993); Hunger (Steve McQueen, 2008); - Sexuality: Pride (Matthew Warchus, 2014); Full Monty (Peter Cattaneo, 1997); - Drug and social marginalization: Londra mi uccide (Hanif Kureishi, 1991); Trainspotting (Danny Boyle, 1996); - Violence and hooligans: Cass (Jon S. Baird, 2008; Awaydays (Pat Holden, 2009).
