English language and translation 1A/1B MA
(objectives)
English Language course, Master degree, 1st year, first semester. This course is offered to graduate students only. The course is also offered to: - selected graduate students specializing in English and German and attending the European Master in Lexicography - Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree students 1A and 1B (1st and 2nd language) courses are unified since the required entry level (B2+) is the same. 12 credits ETS Development of: a) ability to communicate ideas, attitudes, intentions and to solve foreign language-specific communicative problems especially in written texts; b) knowledge and understanding of theoretical and methodological translation issues; c) analytic skills in a range of texts produced in selected domains. Teaching/learning activities include: lectures; language improvement classes; use of language laboratory STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO ATTEND CLASSES. I THEY CAN’T, THEY ARE REQUESTED TO MEET THE COURSE TEACHER AT THE BEGINNING OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR.

English Language course, Master degree, 1st year, first semester. Language classes: primo e secondo semestre. This course is offered to graduate students only. The course is also offered to: - selected graduate students specializing in English and German and attending the European Master in Lexicography - Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree students 1A and 1B (1st and 2nd language) courses are unified since the required entry level (B2+) is the same. 12 credits ETS Use of bilingual dictionaries and of collocations dictionaries in productive activities The course will focus on the (macro and micro) structure of the set dictionaries and on their potential and practical use in written production activities Teaching/learning activities include: lectures; language improvement classes; dictionary evaluation and use. Students must pass their language tests before doing the exam. They will be awarded 12 ects only on completing all activities and after passing their exam.

Main features of specialised English texts - written and spoken - used in international and intercultural communication in plurilingual contexts, in standard English and in English as a Lingua Franca. Analysis of forms, functons, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects of specialised discourse (journalistic, tourist, socio-political,institutional) of various genre and register. Theory and practice of mediation ad translation. Use of dictionaries and corpora. Lessons will be alternated with workshops aimed at the analysis, creation and translation of documents and at the development of micro-projects. Language improvement activities are aimed at developing comprehension and production of texts at level B2.
