The formation of Latin America: the colonial era (sec. XVI-XVII-XVIII).
Spanish America, Portuguese America: the geographical environment, the populations encountered.
The phases of the discovery. The stages of the conquest. The consequences in Europe.
The colonization. The evangelization of the Indians, the role of the religious orders.
Institutions during the Iberian domination. State and Church in America.
Economics, Trade and Transport. Colonial society.
The eighteenth century changes. Reforms and riots.
The independence, phases and major events. Thought and action of Simón Bolívar.
The political and economic order in the nineteenth century. The liberal order and progress.
The secularization of society. The great migrations between nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The impact of the European ideologies. The crisis of the thirties. Populism.
The problem of economic development.
The creation of the Organization of American States and Latin America in the Cold War.
Dictatorships, transition, democracy.

Frontal lessons, with analysis of historical documents.

Examination: oral exam. There will be written tests for attending students.

The syllabus consists of two parts: the general part, monographic part.
