* Description of the course: - This course is meant to provide both a linguistic and a cultural analysis of the texts studied through a reflection on English and Englishes and a study of the language itself. Lessons will deal with English grammar, its structures and idiomatic expressions. The texts provided on the teacher’s board focus on cultural, historical and linguistic issues related to the importance of English and to the position of English as a Lingua Franca. Students will have to deal with these texts in order to read, understand and interpret them from a linguistic, sociological, historical and cultural point of view. The book English for Educators is used to enhance students’ familiarity with a specific vocabulary for social studies and education. - The books indicated in bibliography provide a fundamental reference for a general revision of English morphological and syntactic structures. The study of a grammar book corresponding to B1 level is highly recommended. - Lessons will be held in English and in Italian. Students will play an active role, they will be asked to participate using the language as a practice experience. A brief part of the course will deal with translation practices in order to stimulate a reflection on the contrast between English and Italian. The course structure will include pre-reading and post-reading activities together with reading exercises and listening comprehension. Authentic materials such as films and audio materials will be used in order to provide different models of the use of English. - Students will be encouraged to practice the language individually at home; the books indicated in bibliography provide a fundamental reference as grammar books with keys, bilingual and monolingual dictionaries. Further references will be given during the course (such as web sites on English language learning with exercises)
