This course offers a study of the society, culture and religion of the Principate of Augustus and of its evolution. Students will read the ancient biographical account of this emperor by Suetonius and they will become familiar with the genre of ancient biography as a form of historical evidence. Other forms of evidence such as literature, epigraphy, and numismatics will also be used.
