By the end of the course, the student should be able to master the fundamental problems and themes of contemporary history. (S)he should also be able to reconstruct the pivotal elements of the historical trajectory of empires and national states between the18th and the 20th century, and to analyse and relate the crucial stages of the formation of the idea of Europe.
