(syllabus)
This course will examine the ways language functions, how it influences thought and how it varies according to age, ethnicity, class and gender. It will explore how social identity is constructed and performed, and will consider the creative potential of language in the media (including the Internet), politics and everyday talk. Several practical sessions will be carried out. In particular, the programme of English as a first foreign language (12 Cfu) will be focused on the reading and comprehension of non-literary texts (e.g. newspaper articles, Web sites, etc.). Students will also learn how to use online dictionaries and corpora of the English language.
