PALAEONTOLOGY AND LABORATORY

THE COURSE OF PALAEONTOLOGY AND LABORATORY IS SUBDIVIDED IN THREE TOPICS: TOPIC 1 – GENERAL PALAEONTOLOGY; TOPIC 2 – SYSTEMATIC PALAEONTOLOGY; TOPIC 3 – PALAEONTOLOGICAL LABORATORY. THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO GIVE TO STUDENTS THE BASIC INFORMATIONS ABOUT EVOLUTION OF LIFE, TAPHONOMY, APPLIED PALAEONTOLOGY (PALAEOECOLOGY, PALAEOBIOGEOGRAPHY, BIOSTRATIGRAPHY) AND TAXONOMY OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PHANEROZOIC FOSSIL GROUPS. AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THE AQUIRED PALAEONTOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGES TO SIMPLE THEORETICAL PROBLEMS CONCERNING STRATIGRAPHY AND PALAEOENVIRONMENTAL RECONSTRUCTIONS. FURTHER ON, THEY WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE ON THE FIELD OR IN LABORATORY THE MOST CHARACTERISTIC MACRO- AND MICROFOSSILS USING THEM TO REFER THE EXAMINED SAMPLES TO THEIR PROPER AGE AND DEPOSITIONAL ENVIRONMENT.
