Students (individual or in groups of two) will be involved in the project of a small public building - a museum - in the former slaughterhouse in Testaccio. The museum architecture, beyond its specialized aspects, appears particularly well qualified to experience the first approach to a complex building, for its aesthetic and functional constraints, for the presence of different uses, and for his close relationship with public space. From this point of view, locating in the former slaughterhouse is focusing on familiarity that students have with the place, in order to implement the project with the experience already acquired in terms of measures and use of space, as well as relationships with the urban context.
We will alternate lectures, focus upon individual design aspects, laboratory work, exercises on specific issues, with the aim to advance the student's architectural skills and the representation / presentation of their ideas. There will be periodic connections and shared experiences with the two parallel courses (proff. Panizza and Beccu).

Design of a university museum that must be connected with other functions for study and leisure. This building will be a meeting place for students, professors and citizens, in accordance with the decisions determined during the lessons and the design revisions.
The students have to precise all the functional areas of the building and to define its principal structural details. Above all, they have to combine the library with the nearest layout of the urban structure.
The 2nd Studio deals with an intermediate scale project design. Students face some primary challenges about measures, dimensions and layout of inner spaces, volumes and forms of buildings; the relation to the built context; structural, typological and spatial choices

The study project in the “Design Workshop” of the Second year of the graduate program of Science of Architecture is the design of a building of medium size and complexity. An architectural organism with a moderate complexity, in the middle of the increasing degree of difficulty that characterizes the teaching of architectural design. It aims to provide the architecture student an experience of accomplished design, aware of the urban surroundings and the technological, structural and environmental complexity related to a project of this level. To develop a significant space, both in relation to the architectural organism itself , as in relation to the city. This experience must be a "journey" for the student that includes the learning of theoretical knowledge, of disciplinary knowledge related to the tradition of architectural design, but also of practical skills, manuals, and may extend to the making of an architectural drawing, a presentation panel, notebook sketches, a small model.
The theme of the year is the design of a museum - laboratory at the service of the Department, consisting in a limited number of functions. These are:
-One Exhibition space, a small research area, a laboratory, service areas to the support of the Department (small meeting rooms, a small conference center).
-A Service complex for a small community (students, workers, researchers, visitors etc.), including some central amenities (canteen, meeting spaces, living room, laundry, dining, etc.)
-A common space for collective use that establishes contextual relations between the design elements and that constitutes a small centrality or even a "city gate" to the scale of the neighborhood.
