Microfacies definition. Sample techniques, sample preparations and instruments for the microfacies analysis. Microfacies components: grains, matrix, cement (genesis and palaeoenvironmental implications). Classification of lithoclasts. Grain-size and texture. Classification of carbonates. Examples of microfacies interpretation: qualitative and quantitative methods (multivariate analysis approach). Insight on bioclasts: identification of the main taxa in thin section. Geochemical analyses (stable isotopes, strontium isotopes) in microfacies studies. Gamma-ray in microfacies analysis.
