The aim of the first part of the course is to offer to the students some fundamental instruments of knowledge relative to:
- the meaning of politics;
- the differences between science and non-science;
- how to construct scientific theories;
- elements of methodology used by political science to investigate the political phenomena;
- some crucial themes, such as the state and the processes of state-building and nation-building and the process of European integration;
- the types and characteristics of political regimes (non-democratic and democratic);
- the parts of the political system (elités and political classes, political parties, groups).

The second part of the course will cover, always in a comparative perspective, the theme of democracy and its operation. The following themes will be taken into consideration:
- Elections and electorial systems;
- Political representation;
- The democratic institutional systems (parliament, government, public administrations);
- The players and the dynamics of policy-making.

Evaluation

For students who attend the course a written test is foreseen in December 2016.
The test includes 31 multiple choice questions. Each question is accompanied by four closed answers. The student must insert a cross for the correct answer among the proposed answers. Every correct answer is one point.

For students who do not frequent the course there will be an oral exam.

MEETING WITH PROFESSOR
During the course (first semester), the weekly meetings with the Professor will take place on WEDNESDAYS from 11-12 am.
