(syllabus)
The course aims to provide students with a methodological path to face, with full awareness, the restoration of buildings with historical-architectural or archaeological value. This will be done through single or group exercises carried out on multi-layered buildings dating back to different historical periods (from Roman times to twentieth-century buildings). Particular attention will be given to preliminary investigations: from historical and documentary analysis, to researches aimed at understanding both the materiality of the building and the factors of decay. Topics related to the choices - inherent to the conservation of the material, the restoration, the reintegration of the image, the use of compatible materials and techniques - will also be addressed: all operations guided by a project that does not exclude contemporary addition, understood as part of an historical process not concluded but, on the contrary, in continuous evolution.

The course is set in continuity with the didactic experience matured in the preceding years that it has the purpose to teach to the students the fundamental elements of the architectural restauration of an element of Roman historical building in a context with strong historical-architectural stratification. The case of study for this year exercise is the block included among via delle Botteghe Oscure, via Caetani, via dei Delfini, and via dei Polacchi, where today is the Museum of the Crypta Balbi. A block whose complexity represents in exemplary way the historical stratification of the building fabric of the Rome historical center and offers the opportunity to decline the investigation under different points of view. On the bases of the documentation furnished by the teacher and of bibliographical and archival searches to be conducted under the teaching staff supervision, the students, organised in groups composed by a maximum of three people, are requested to pursue a cognitive and projectual trial facing all the different disciplinary aspects.

The course aim is to teach students the basic elements of architectural restoration, as applied to a historic Roman structure situated in a complex historic-architectural context. The goal to be pursued is to ntrodurre knowledge of the architectural language of the Roman tradition and the use of art techniques to build pre-modern as practical for an active and consistent conservation of historic buildings.

The module aims to provide students with the theoretical bases / practices to develop a major project and address the survey operations recognizing, for different contexts, such as operational methods are more suitable. The survay, in fact, intended as a form of knowledge of an architectural work in all its aspects (formal, constructive, spatial), it will be time discretization of the existing and must make use of different methods of investigation. It will focus also on the verification of the acquisition of the ability to comparison / integration of data resulting from operations of measure and the historical record.

(syllabus)
The integrated course of Survey in the Laboratory of Restoration aims to provide the basis for the measurement and understanding of the architecture. The survey is an indispensable stage in understanding and studying the architecture to be restored, to touch the wall hangings, check its preservation status through photographic campaigns and zonal analysis on the detected elevations. It also has the potential to return to the detector and the formal information proportional work itself. Indispensable, when it comes to historic building, is the knowledge of building techniques, as well as the geometrical information on the apparatus and molded ornament. Through direct relief and recovery techniques using trilaterations, students fail to return the work in question, with particular attention to the areas accessible for direct measurements. Today, however, the science of the survey has changed dramatically, mainly due to the advent technology with more and more innovative instruments and precision. The course will therefore be articulated in a second phase aimed at the knowledge and use of tools for the survey. First through photomodeling, direct heir of the photogrammetric survey. Through the use of appropriate software will achieve point clouds and polygon meshes suitable for the creation of orthophotos and photoplane, necessary and indispensable also for the degradation of the mapping. Finally, to evaluate and plan, there is a laser scanning campaign that will put students in contact with one of the most sophisticated and innovative instruments. There are 3 exercises, with deliveries during the course and improvements to be made for the examination.
1- Sight detection. Eidotypes and the Relief project. Presentation of the topic exercise 1: Eidotypes of largo dei Librai Classroom exercise. Photography eidotypes.
2- Direct detection techniques. Examples of Relief. RDF for photo-straightening. Cleaning of eidotypes. Material for direct survey.
3/4/5 - Direct Relief, exit at Largo dei Librari.
6- Relief aimed at restoration. Classroom work for the construction of the ground attack models.
7- The instrumental survey. Techniques and tools. Examples. Use of Photography. The relief from photos. Basic techniques for photographic shooting. Introduction to Photoscan. Presentation of the tutorial in the classroom.
8- Photomodeling. Classroom exercise with objects brought from home. Presentation of exercises 2 and 3.
9- Instrumental survey, exit in the area of the Roman forum. Probably on Saturday morning
10- Survey aimed at restoration. Classroom work for the creation of 3D models of the photographic campaign at the Roman Forum
11/12 - Relief aimed at restoration. Classroom work for the realization of 3D models of the project theme.

SPADAFORA GIOVANNA
(syllabus)
We will investigate topics relating to the measure theory and main episodes in the history of the survey will mentioned. Different methods of survey (direct, indirect, integrated) will be discussed, pointing up that the choice of any method should be based on the type of structure, on the period of construction and on final aim of the survey. All issues concerning the drawing of the data emerging from the survey will be discussed. In relation to the topics of the “Laboratorio di Restauro”, the module will consist of lectures and practical activities on-site.
