The course aims to outline an overview of Portuguese literature from the beginning to the fifteenth century, placing special emphasis on the evolution of the Galician-Portuguese lyric poetry(XII-XIV century). Main contents of the course: - Cultural and historical overview on development of Galician-Portuguese language, the origins of the Galician-Portuguese lyric poetry, centres of medieval poetry in the Iberian Peninsula; - analysis of the themes and formal aspects of the three main genres of the Galego-Portuguese lyric poetry: cantiga d'amor, cantiga de amigo, cantigas d'escarnho e maldizer; - Analysis of the main aspects of the religious-Marian genre: Cantigas de Santa Maria of Alfonso X; - The Manuscript Tradition of Galician-Portuguese lyric poetry; - Evolution of Portuguese literature: prose and historiography.
