(syllabus)
What is cultural heritage and why is it important? When, where and how did cultural heritage start to be protected from a legal point of view? What legal instruments are available to protect cultural heritage? What is the relationship between cultural heritage and human rights? The course aims to provide answers to these questions through the analysis of international treaties, European and national legislation and specific jurisprudential cases. In order to introduce students to the complexity of the topic, a historical overview (with a particular focus on Italy) will be provided to understand how the legal concept of cultural heritage has developed at national, European and global level.
