The Balkans and the rise of nationalism; Ottoman Empire decadence and the Nation-building and State building processes; The rise of the imperialism: South-east Europe from the Balkan wars to World War I; Society, economy and culture in the interwar years; the authoritarian “temptations” ; World War II in the Balkans; The Sovietization of South-east Europe and the Hellenic exception; Among the USSR model, the Stalinist tyranny and the Yugoslav way to Socialism, the fall of the communist regimes and the transitions to democracy; the Yugoslav case; somewhere between integrating to EU and the European outskirts.
