The course "Progetto degli Spazi Aperti" proposes a study on the feasibility of the first Widespread Botanical Garden of Rome. The design of the Botanical Garden is an opportunity to re-consider two urban different realities of the city, part of Ostiense and Valco San Paolo Districts. Some surveys will be carried out during the course, in order to take not only data and informations, but also sensitivity to the perception of the elements that collaborate to the shape of the "open spaces." Following the next survey and critical analysis of the area, it will work in the classroom by design. The experimentation on this project will be based on the research of a design matrix that can redefine an urban identity through the re-reading of the structure of the city and the use of different habitats that contribute to the formation of a botanical garden. The classroom work will be supported by lectures on the theory and practice of landscape discipline and botany.

This is a programme for students of Architecture who are interested to plant ecology. The programme is divided in two parts. The first one is based on the main methodologies currently in use in plant biology and on the analysis of the problems connected to the conservation of the biodiversity and the management of the natural, rural and urban environment. The second part is focused on the definition of environmental-structural models to help the design of the outdoor spaces with an in-depth examination of the Italian vegetation.
Course schedule: Introduction to plant ecology; Studies of the methodologies (Flora, Vegetation, Landscape); Current and potential vegetation; The main biomes in the world; Vegetation zones and bands in the Italian landscape; Phyto-climate of the Lazio region - Relations between climate, soil and vegetation; Succession primary and secondary - series of vegetation; Plant-Sociology and mapping of vegetation; Types of open spaces and environmental design.
Career prospects: The study programme has a clear focus on biodiversity and conservation biology to restore degraded areas and hopefully to increase the biodiversity, creating habitat and quality of the outdoor spaces. With this course is possible to earn 2/10 credits of the design of open spaces.

CIANCI MARIA GRAZIA
(syllabus)
This section deeply examines the comprehension and the representation of the territory and the urban space. The students will explore several representation techniques from sketches to analysis and treatment of pictures and maps. The program will also provide the tools to understand and interpretate the urban design, focusing on how different demands and purposes over the history have always produced different iconographic products. Always focused on the modern and contemporary representation of landscape and with special attention to the contemporary languages, the program will be divided in four sections: 1. Theoretical and technical fundaments of landscape representation 2. Site visits to the project area 3. Individual exercise of representation techniques to improve the skills and gain further studio experience 4. The final presentation material to produce will be decided during the course
