DESIGN STUDIO 2M
(objectives)
The laboratory 2M is the place of the natural development of the skills acquired in previous laboratory 1M. Its objective is to achieve a product comparable to what - in the current legislation in Italy - usually is defined as the final project, through the acquisition of a design sensibility oriented towards realism and based on the close integration of the contributions of the four specialist teaching modules, which allows cross-checking to be able to produce a reasonably achievable project.

(objectives)
The design studio’s goal is to achieve a product comparable to what the Italian legislation usually defines as “final design”. It is, in other words, to put students in conditions, starting from the needs of the construction, to manage the simultaneous presence of specialist contributions (composition, structural, regulations, technological, environmental, technical physics, economic) involved in an achievable architectural project.

(syllabus)
The topic is a medium complexity architectural project, on which the cross-checks of the four teaching modules converge: Architectural and Urban Composition, Architectural Technology, Technical Physics, Economic evaluation of the project. The main topics concern: - Criteria for liveability of the space - Architecture and construction - Relationships between shapes and materials - Normative references on building construction - Representation and communication of the construction project - Plant engineering and environmental elements - Advanced materials and construction procedures - Details of alternative construction solutions - Economic evaluation of the design procedures - Checking the feasibility
The project developed in the design studio 2m is the natural continuation of what started in the design studio 1m. The prerequisite for registration is to have followed the previous design studio 1M in the same channel.

(syllabus)
AFTER THE PRELIMINARY DESIGN, COMPLETED DURING THE PREVIOUS LABORATORIO, STUDENTS ARE REQUESTED TO FURTHER DEVELOPE THEIR PROJECT. TO UPGRADE THEIR DESIGNS TO A “DEFINITIVO” LEVEL, STUDENTS WILL INVESTIGATE A SERIES OF CONSTRUCTION, MECHANICAL, ECONOMICAL ISSUES. During the first part of the semester each student will work in team. In the second part, students should select a complex element of their project, in order to study it at a more detailed scale.

The aim of the module is to give the students the tools to design the interaction between the shape and the orientation of the building, the materials and the characteristics of the envelope, so that the building can provide the best comfort conditions with the use of very little amount of energy The module is organized in lessons to illustrate the potentials of materials, building components and devices for better management and energy flow through the skin of the building, and meetings seminars for a critical analysis of student’s proposals

Foreword
Architecture today strongly entails greater adherence of construction techniques, materials and energy consumptions to the requirements of a positive environmental plan. The definition of construction techniques in accordance with an ecological vision of architecture and space climate control techniques, contribute to the creation of a more thorough construction design methodology. In this respect, a competent use of natural resources (heating, cooling, natural lighting) is extremely significant, as well as the knowledge of environment-friendly materials and components, the definition of building enclosure (walls, windows and doors, roof systems) and quality parameters. It is therefore ethically necessary to provide building services with a reduced environmental impact. It is a design philosophy that takes into account the elements of nature, specific needs, eco-friendly artifacts and more comfortable, pleasant and less polluting cities.
Topics of the lessons 1- Climate and architecture 2- Thermal comfort 3- Illuminating comfort 4- Acoustic comfort in buildings 5- Installation Technology 6- System control engineering

FONTANA LUCIA
(syllabus)
The lectures are focused on basic subjects as heat transfer, psycrometrics, climatic conditions, thermal and visual comfort and on their relation with energy and environmental performance of the buildings. Heating and cooling loads. Passive (bioclimatic architecture) and active (plants, building services..) systems are also illustrated in the lessons. During the course students will carry out a building analysis and project (starting on the Lab1M developed design project) focused also on the energetic behavior and performance of the building itself. They will deal with the following topics: 1. Climate condition and environmental analysis (sun, winds, sound..) and control, with reference to the designed building. Passive systems (direct solar radiation control systems, natural ventilation and passive cooling). 2. Building Envelope design, focusing on energetic behavior and thermal properties. 3. Heating and cooling loads estimation. 4. Building plants and mechanical services integration in architecture – Location and sizing. 5. HVAC systems type choice, design and distribution. 6. Solar Technologies integration in buildings for heating and electricity production. 7. Daylighting, FLD calculation. 8. Acoustics.
LAB 2MB Building Physics The course allows students to develop a deeper understanding and control of the energetic behavior and performance of the building and of its components, of the building-plant system, of the occupant comfort issues (thermal, lighting, acoustical).
