(objectives)
Students will learn to solve design problems for Structures in Architecture. They will be expected to know how to use various construction materials for the design of the structure of buildings, with particular attention to the earthquake zone. Moreover, they will be expected to know how to use the models of structural mechanics and of theory of structures, solving analytical problems but even by mastering the most modern structural design software tools.

(syllabus)
The course aims to train male and female students in the awareness of the mechanical behavior of some structural types, according to the form and the material part, as well as geometric dimensions. After a brief overview of the technology of some building materials and their mechanical properties, the students will be provided with mechanical models of planar and spatial trusses, beams, with particular attention to Vierendeel beams, continuous beams with multiple supports and to plane frames. About the means of settlement for statically indeterminate structures, the stiffness method and the force method will be presented. The course will also address the basics of the spatial organization of a building in relation to issues relating to the action of horizontal forces (wind, earthquake, etc..). The mechanical models of arch and wire will be proposed. The content will address also the geotechnical classification of rocks and soils, as well as some hints on their mechanical behavior.
