(syllabus)
The course offers an analysis of some architectural works, selected as examples of different approaches to some basic design topics. The architectural examples are taken mainly from the twentieth and twenty-first century, but include references to ancient architecture in relation to specific issues. Lessons follow a thematic rather than a chronological narrative, aimed at presenting the history of architecture as a living matter: an inventory of figurative, spatial and compositional solutions useful for the contemporary project. The topics of the lectures will be: - The relationship between and ARCHITECTURAL FIGURE and CONSTRUCTION; - The relationship between STRUCTURE and SPACE; - The relationship between ARCHITECTURE, PLACE and LANDSCAPE; - The relationship between ARCHITECTURE, CITY AND HISTORY.
