(syllabus)
The course considers the meanings of activity and passivity of consciousness in Leibniz and Husserl and it highlights their common views, with a particular focus on the second book of Leibniz’ New Essays on Human Understanding, which is dedicated to the formation of ideas, on the dialogue with the Lockean sensualism and on how Husserl conceives the concepts of passive and active synthesis. It will be also analyzed the role of the virtual, the memory and the attention in the two philosophies.
