BURRASCANO MARCO
(syllabus)
It is a laboratory of architectural design in the first year of the “Laurea Magistrale in Restauro”, a course of twelve credits, this implies a thought on how to interest and train students who have chosen the restoration to finish their studies.
For this purposes the main project to develop is in San Saba in a place with strong historical value, ancient and modern, in a lot adjacent to the monument and the center of the extraordinary intervention of social housing from the early twentieth century designed by Quadrio Pirani.
The theme provides a residential shelter for the refugees recognized by UNHCR, as well as a series of complementary public services for use by refugees and local residents, in order to integrate the social function in the neighborhood and at the same time to complete the allocation of services and public spaces of the inhabitants. The place is ideal for a transformation in this sense, because the community of San Saba lives and relates as if it were in a small town while being instead in the monumental center of Rome, this is certainly helped by the particular morphology and the social composition of the neighborhood.
In addition to this general theme there are other specific issues on which the laboratory emphasizes that we believe are very useful in particular to work in restoration: - The quality of the spaces - Materials in their technical and evocative dimension - The costruction, as a process and as details, - The relationship with the historical context, intended as physical context as monumental and social fabric - Attention to thresholds and public-private indoor-outdoor
Engineering Physics
Decisive in the laboratory is the role of engineering physics, not only as plants, but also as comfort of space; it’s an entire module of fifty hours, leaded by Prof. Paolo Candidi, which took place in total sharing with teachers of architectural design. The theoretical part of the course is addresed by the search for maximum comfort through the use of passive systems mainly aimed above all minimizing energy consumption, exploring both the aspects related to air conditioning and thermohygrometric regulation. We will try, therefore, to optimize the layout of volumes and environments using shading and natural ventilation as well as the study of the building.
Activities of the course
During the course students will not work only on the final project, a series of exercises will train students
The time spent in the course consists of various activities:
- Practical exercises
- Exercises of theoretical research
- Lectures
- Collective reviews of the projects
- Revisions of specific projects
Seminar "Basic Architecture" - Seven short lessons of architecture
