PART II – Towns
The course focuses on Southern Italian towns, whose political, economic and social features shall be highlighted. In that respect, their relations with the central Norman and Aragon monarchies shall be examined. Furthermore, particular attention shall be also given to aspects of the cultural and religious life, such as the relations between the secular clergy and the influence of mendicant orders on urban societies and communities.

PART I – Features of Medieval History (5th – 15th century)

Topics: Late Antiquity and its end; Roman-barbarian kingdoms; Longobards and Byzantines in Italy; the Franks: from kingdoms to imperial power; Early Middle Age Christianity; bishops and monks; fuedum, curtis, seigniory; agrarian economy and trade between Early and Late Middle Ages; Church Reformation in the 11th century; Italian communes; European kingdoms (10th-13th century); culture and religious experiences between the 12th and the 14th century; the 14th Century Crisis; seigniories and regional states in Italy, national monarchies in Europe.
