LATIN EPIGRAPHY (UNDERGRADUATE) 2015-16

Rome and the Roman world: an epigraphic civilization

No human civilization has ever celebrated and exhibited the written word more than the greek-Roman society. The course aims to be an introduction to the study of the Latin Epigraphy in the Roman world, from its origins to the fall of the Western Roman Empire. It will proceed to the reading of original inscriptions: original evidences, photocopies and photographs (PowerPoint). The texts will be reviewed and transcribed following the criteria of the scientific edition. Individual specimens of different categories of epigraphs (sacred burial, honorary, laws, etc.) will be analyzed with particular attention to their historical, social and topographical context.

▪ Study course: LETTERS (DM 270) Bachelor Degree.
▪ Type: BASIC.
▪ Total credits: 6 = 36 teaching hours.
▪ Aims: study of various epigraphic sources in Latin, their formal and shape peculiarities, their ancient modern edition; introduction to the consultation of the collections and the other instruments of the epigraphic research.
▪ Teaching methods: classroom lectures and exercises on the original Epigraphic Collection of the Museo Nazionale Romano Terme di Diocleziano (Rome).
▪ Teaching language: Italian (it is possible to get programs in English, French and German).
▪ Type of examination and evaluation: oral exam with final grade.
▪ SEMESTER: SECOND (March-April 2016).
▪ START CLASSES: Monday, February 29, 2016.
▪ TIME CLASSES: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, at 08: 00-10: 00, Lecture on Ancient World Studies Department.
▪ Prerequisites: requires knowledge of Latin, Roman history, also in conjunction with its course, and a frequency not occasional.
▪ Exam session: vd. calendar on the bulletin board and online.

▪ Texts for attending students: A. Buonopane, Manuale di epigrafia latina, Roma (Carocci) 2009 ; xerocopies provided by the teacher in class.

▪ Texts for non attending students: they must agree a program with the teacher; the study texts can be in English, French, German, Spanish.
