(syllabus)
The main aim of the Programme of Lingua Inglese 2 (English 2) for the degree course in Modern and Contemporary Languages and Cultures is to develop and consolidate the student's ability to translate a variety of authentic non-literary texts (e.g. newspaper articles, academic papers, manuals, etc.) from English into Italian. The student will learn how to distinguish various text typologies, which differ at the level of discourse, both in terms of their pragmatic purposes, and of their lexicogrammar features (e.g. the connections between different language registers and the choice of words and morpho-syntactic structures). To this purpose, the use of advanced tools for translation, such as online dictionaries and corpora of contemporary English, will also be taken into account. This course, therefore, will deal with fundamental notions about discourse analysis and translation studies, and will include several practical sessions. Moreover, the programme of English as 1st foreign language (12 Cfu) will focus on the use of advanced tools for translation, e.g. online dictionaries and English language corpora.
