The need for SDR. 3G software radio applications. A traditional radio architecture and an ideal software defined radio architecture. Software defined radio project complexity. Basic SDR block diagram. System level functional partitioning and digital frequency partitioning. COTS implementation of the basic architecture.
RF implementation issues. Noise and channel capacity. Link budget. Free space loss, practical loss models, IMT 2000 path loss models. 3G RF requirements: receiver and 3G transmitter requirements. Multicarrier power amplifiers. Signal processing capacity tradeoff .
Digital Filtering. Digital conversion fundamentals. Sample rate, bandpass sampling, oversampling, antialias filtering, ENOBS, quantization, static and dynamic errors. ADC techniques. Dithering, clock jitter and aperture uncertainty, figure of merit. DACs. Digital NCO, digital mixers, digital filters. DUCs and DDCs. DSP performance. FPGAs, symbol rate and chip-rate partitioning .
Smart Antennas. 3G smart antennas requirements. Applying SDR principles to antenna systems. Switched beam arrays, optimum combining/adaptive arrays. DOA arrays, beam forming for CDMA .
Object-Oriented Representation of Radios and Network Resources. Major software architectural choices. HW specific software architecture. Abstracted open software architecture. JTRS software communications architecture specification. Real-time operating systems. High level software languages .
Cognitive Radios and Cognitive Radio Networks. Cognitive radios and dynamic spectrum acces. Analytical approach and algorithms for DSA. Fundamental limits of cognitive radios. Spectrum sensing to detect specific primary system. Spectrum sensing for cognitive multi-radio networks. Delta compression and security issues. Applying the game theory to cognitive radios .
Future trends in SDR. Applications for wireless systems. SDR examples: framework and platforms, base transceiver station, 3G SDR testbeds .
